Biography of Brian May, Rock Star and Astronomer In the late 1960s, Brian Harold May was an eager student in physics, studying to become an astronomer. He also happened to be a gigging musician. In 1968, he came to musical attention with the band Smile, and later went on to headline tours as part of the band Queen. In 1974, he put his studies aside to perform and tour with Queen.   With the death in 1991 of lead singer Freddie Mercury, Brian May embarked on a solo career as a musician even while performing with Queen and other musicians. Yet, as he has often noted, his past as a scientist never strayed far from his mind. Eventually, Brian May went back to school to finish his work. His father, Harold May, worked for the Ministry of Aviation. His mother Ruth, was of Scottish descent. May attended schools in the area, and  went on to study physics and mathematics at Imperial College, London. He graduated in 1968 and began studies toward his Ph.D. that year. He was first married to Christine Mullen in 1974 and they had three children. In 1986, he met actress Anita Dobson and subsequently divorced his first wife so they could marry. Dobson has been with May throughout his musical career with Queen as well as his solo musical performances. Brian May went on to become a world-famous musical performer both with his band, Queen, as well as a noted solo performer.   Career in Astrophysics As a graduate student, May had been interested in studying dust particles in the solar system and had published two research papers. Eager to resume that work, he enrolled as a graduate student again in 2006. He finished his studies and got himself back up to speed on studies of dust particles during the years hed been away touring as a musician. His thesis work, titled A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud was submitted in 2007,  37 years after he started the research. He used techniques of absorption spectroscopy and Doppler spectroscopy to study the light scattered by dust particles in the solar system. He did his work at Teide Observatory in the Canary Islands. After review by his advisors and a thesis committee, Brian Mays thesis was accepted. He was awarded his doctorate on May 14, 2008.   May went on to become a visiting researcher at Imperial College, where he continues to do work.  He has also been involved the New Horizons mission to the planet Pluto as a science team collaborator due to his solar system work. He acted as chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University from 2008-2013 and has appeared numerous times on such programs as BBCs Sky at Night show. He wrote books with the late astronomer Sir Patrick Moore and writer Chris Lintott. Activism and Additional Interests Thanks to his work with the late Sir  Moore, May participated in the efforts to save Moores estate and effects. He is also an avid supporter of animal rights and animal welfare. He continues to raise funds and awareness of issues involving wildlife in the UK and elsewhere. May has contributed his musical talents to spread the word about issues involving hunting and culling of animals in his home country.   Quite apart from his activities in astronomy, music, and animal rights, Brian May is also a collector of Victorian stereography.  He has written a book about T.R. Williams, the English stereographer. This hobby started when May was still in graduate school in the 1970s and has given him a massive collection of stereo pair images. He has also patented a viewer called the Owl Viewer, which  can be used to examine the stereographic scenes in his latest book.   Accomplishments In addition to his immense success with the band Queen, Brian May has achieved notable success in the field of astrophysics. Asteroid 52665 Brianmay was named after him, as was a species of damselfly  (heteragron brianmayi). In 2005, he was given a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for his achievements in music.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. The idea was to vary the concentration of the protease enzyme in a constant volume of the milk sample and measure the reaction time by the end point, taken as the time taken for the clearing up of the solution. Values for various concentrations were obtained and the results evaluated. The dependent variables in the experiment were the concentration of the milk solution and the enzyme dilutions and the independent variables were visual time measurement, temperature and the degree of mixing the two solutions. Equal volumes of a protease solution and the milk sample (5 cm3) were placed in different test tubes (TT1 & TT2). Milk solution was prepared by dissolving 5 g of milk powder in 100 ml of water. Contents from both tubes were mixed together and the stop watch started. The mixture test tube was placed in front of a white paper marked with a cross and the time measured up to the point when the cross was visible through the solution. This gave the time interval for the disappearance of the substrate and so the time values for the reaction were expressed as a function of 1/T. It is very clear from the above table as well as graph that with the successive decrease in the concentration of the enzyme, it took more time for the solution to clear up indicating that the amount of enzyme influenced the rate of the reaction. This confirms the fact that more the number of enzyme molecules available, the faster will be the rate of the reaction. The Effects of Sexism in Schools The theme about stereotypes and prejudice is really important in our society. Walter Lipmann is the man, who defines first the term stereotype in his book How society thinks (1922). He says that stereotype is something that helps us live in the reality easily. That is the positive said, the negative is, that stereotype thinking stops us from out of the box thinking and open mind. Walter Lipmann also defines the term stereotype à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã… ¾ stereotype is a commonly held popular belief about specific social groups or types of individuals, standardized and simplified conceptions of groups based on some prior assumptions. Prejudice is a term, which defines our tendency for judging someone before we know him. These terms have a positive said too- they make communication easy for us. But I think that the negatives about stereotypes and prejudice are more than the positives. There are many stereotypes even in the education system. One of the most common stereotypes is sexism. It affects every said of our lives. Almost every men and woman have same stereotypes about the gender roles. The really important aspect of this problem is that sexism is well known in education system and many kids are suffering from it. It begins in elementary school and continues till graduating from college, sometimes even after that. Little boys and girls are constantly told about their gender roles and how they should react and behave, because of those roles. They are given no choice they should behave as expected and no other way. There is another aspect of the problem. In schools and colleges, teachers and professors expect different results by boys and girls. The boys are considered with less potential and everyone expects lower grades by them. Girls are considered as good in some things, but awful in math, physics and other science like that. Those opinions can make things really difficult for the children, because they cant show their real abilities and skills. Sexism, which entered the lexicon in 1970 as an analogue to racism, connotes a fundamental and pervasive institutionalized bias on the basis of sex, with discrimination usually directed against woman ( Frazier and Sadker 1973).The rationale for sexism is the biological difference between males and females that dictates differential social roles,status, and norms ( Sleeter and Grant 1988). Such freedom from these stereotypes would allow children to exhibit behaviors and acquire skills based solely on their personal preferences devoid of the constraints of the societal norms that surround their particular gender (Bem 1983). However, in the real world, from the moment of their birth, children are placed into either a boy or girl category (Bem 1983; Fagot and Leinbach 1993; Kimmel 2004). This seemingly fundamental physiological distinction is automatically surrounded by a system of societal expectations that determine which behaviors are appropriate for boys and which are appropriate for girls (Fagot and Leinbach 1993) and facilitate the creation and maintenance of gender role stereotypes (Ridgeway and Correll 2004) in Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2010 Abstract Eaglys social role theory (Eagly and Steffen 1984). From this paragraph, we can make the logical conclusion, that something in our society and educational system is wrong. We raise our children in a world, in which these stereotypes are very common. These categories that we put kids in have an effect o n their entire life. In school, boys and girls come with some ideas how to behave. They learn that from their family direct, or by coping models of behavior. Since the first grade, everyone continues to expect from children to act as they are told to- like a girl or a boy. Girls cant play with cars and toy soldiers, because they will become women, and this is not good for a woman. The woman should we nice and tender. If the boys are sometimes a little rude- this is not a problem, because from them this is expected. If they want to play with dolls this is not write, because they can grow up feminize. This is something that reflects really hard on children psychic. When they grow up, they continue to follow that models of behavior and that is cosign a lot of problems. In the education is the same- the boy should we really good in math, but if he can write, this is a little strange. A girl should write beautiful, but nobody would belief, that she knows a lot about physics. This is a h uge problem, because it makes communicating, growing up, developing a hard and intense process, which is put in frame and cant go out of it- other way the kid is consider as strange. As an example for that frames may be considered situation of gender and mathematics in England and Wales. Teresa Smart wrote an article on that mater, which is explains why girls abandon science before leaving school Gender and mathematics in England and Wales. In the article, Smart explains, that the stereotype- boys are good in mathematics is putting girls under pressure and they prefer to focus on other sciences. The difference between boys and girls are also discussed in the study Gender differences in mathematical achievement related to the ratio of girls to boys in school classes by Terje Manger and Rolf Gjestad. This study discuss the importance of the number of boys and girl in the classroom. The authors are analyzing a research, done in 3 grade in classes with many boys and less girls, many girls and less boys, and a class with a balance. The results do not support the single-sex teaching theory. That theory clames, that single-sex school gives an opportunity for developing to both sexes. In that study, authors also prove, that there is a difference between boys and girls in mathematics: The differences in mathematical achievement between boys and girls are well documented in the educational and psychological literature. While the differences in general samples are decreasing (Feingold 1988) disparate proportions favoring boys are well-known in mathematically gifted samples,(Benbow 1988 ; Benbow and Stanley 1983; Hyde, Fennema and Lamon 1990).The differences also vary according to mathematical subskills. Boys seem to perform better than girls on tasks requiring application of algebraic rules or algorithms, as well as on tasks in which the understanding of mathematical concepts and number relationship is required (Mills, Ablard and Stumpf 1993). The newest researches on that matter are proving something different- every one of us has different part of the brain developed more than the other. People, who have more developed write part, are with better achievements in mathematics and other sciences like that; people, who have more developed left part of the brain are good in history, literature and other. That is a prove, that the difference is not coming from the gender. From grade school to graduate school to the world of work, males and females are separated by a common language. This communications gender gap affects self-esteem, educational attainment, career choice, and income. But its hidden lessons generally go unnoticed. Sexism in the classroom: from grade school to graduate school by Myra Sadker and David Sadker. Myra and David Sadker are researching classroom interactions in elementary and secondary schools. Their article is focusing on four of their conclusions of the research. The first conclusion they made is: male students receive more attention from teachers and are given more time to talk in classrooms. The second conclusion: Educators are generally unaware of the presence or the impact of this bias.. The third conclusion: Brief but focused training can reduce or eliminate sex bias from classroom interaction.. The four conclusion : Increasing equity in classroom interaction increases the effectiveness of the teacher as well. Equity and effectiveness are not competing concerns; they are complementary. Myra and David Sadkers first study is proving, that male students are involved in more interaction than females. Teachers are talking more to them and allow them to talk more in class. The teachers observed in this study were both male and female; they represented both white and minority groups; they taught in the areas of language arts, social studies, and mathematics. This proves, that the teachers were affect mainly by the sexism stereotype in classrooms. The educators are not aware of the impact of sexism in the classroom. They dont realize, that their behavior in not adequate. They dont understand, that this way they are stopping females developing, and lowing their chances for receiving good education. This unawareness of the educators is a big problem in schools. Sexism cant be removed, when nobody realizes that its there. All it takes, to removing sex bias from classrooms is to train the educators. They need to know, that sexism has to be removed from the classrooms, that this is cosign problems to females not only in school, but also later, when they are working. When there is sexism in the classroom, the education process cannot be effective. When teachers are not realizing the problem and cant remove it, they cant be useful to the children. If there is equity in the classroom, the process will be effective, this will increase the chances of children to have a good education. In her paper : Gender freedom and the subtleties of sexist education, Barbara Houston is discussing the idea of gender-free education. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ the following three distinct meanings. In the first sense, the strong sense, a gender-free education would be one that made active attempts to disregard gender by obliterating gender differentiations which arose within the educational sphere. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦.Another example of this approach is the elimination of activities, such as wrestling, in which there are thought to be significant gender differences in achievements due to natural and ineradicable biological differences between the sexes. In her paper, Houston is focusing on the education, that eliminates gender and its ignoring it. The idea is, that gender should be no longer used as a criteria, that boys and girls should not be separated and not be given instructions how to behave, judged by their gander : à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ gender-free to mean freedom from gender bias. On this un derstanding, a gender-free education would eliminate gender bias. From this sources, discussing the theme about sexism in school, can be made several conclusions. Sexism, as sociological and culture understanding of the gender differences, exist in schools of all kinds. Sexism is the separation between boys and girls, based on their biological differences and affects a lot their education. Male student are given priority, females are underrated- they cannot show their real potential. This is big problem in classrooms, because sex roles are putting educational process in frames, they stop boys and girls to develop, learn everything they want to, not what they supposed to. Teachers sometimes are not aware that there is sexism in their classroom and they dont know how to eliminate it. The good education is one, that is gender-free, which is not focused on the gender differences and is removing this as a criteria for educating.

Classical Liberalism VS Classical Conservatism Essay -- American Gover

Are you Republican or Democrat? Maybe you are Conservative or Liberal? What do these terms mean and how did they begin? Classical Conservatism is defined as â€Å"a political philosophy emphasizing the need for the principles of natural law and transcendent moral order.†(Frohnen, Beer, and Nelson, 2006) Classical Liberalism is described as â€Å"a philosophy committed to the ideal of limited government and liberty of individuals including freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and free markets.† (Hudelson, 1999) These two ideas have shaped our philosophies and parties for centuries to come. These philosophies were made possible by many bright men of the time like Edmund Burke, John Adams, John Locke and Adam Smith. Classical conservatism or traditional conservatism, Burkean conservatism, and Toryism, is a party that has re-expressed their convections to fit the time. (Frohnen, Beer, and Nelson, 2006) In classical conservatism, many parties have adapted their view points. One of the first parties in American that adapted the philosophies of conservatism was the Whigs. The Whigs opposed monarchial power, advocated internal reform of administration, and freedom under the law. They believed in balancing orders in the common wealth and religious toleration. (Kirk, 1953) One person highly recognized for his work in the public sector for conservatism was Edmund Burke. Edmund Burke was born January 12, 1729 in Dublin, Ireland, and died July 9, 1797 in Beaconsfield, England. (Lock, 1999) During his sixty-eight years, he was a very smart and good man; He was an Irish statesman, author, orator, and political theorist and philosopher. Edmund Burke was known for supporting the American Revolution but opposing the Fr... ...ssical conservatives are scared of it, but they do know that is needed with some restrictions, or as modern liberals would say, â€Å"safety nets, lots and lots of safety nets.† Classical liberals love the free market system because of what it can do for the economy and society. Classical liberalism and classical conservatism are closely based as seen by Edmund Burke who was admired for his political philosophies from both classical liberalism and classical conservatism. Yet, with any group of people, not everyone is going to agree, and parties form even if it over a small issue. Consider the christian faith, there are many different denominations because of the beliefs in minor doctrine, but they all believe that Jesus is the Son of God, like the classical liberals and classical conservatives believe in the Constitution. Evidence Based Practice Essay

Examine the ways that health professionals can use the five steps of evidence-based practice (EBP) as a practical framework to overcoming barriers to locating, appraising and applying best research evidence. Use an occupational health and safety practice as an example. Examples of occupational health and safety practices include:   Use of professional protective equipment (e.g. gloves)   Safety considerations when using equipment (e.g. sharps)   (or a topic you select yourself in negotiation with your LIC) Health professionals are very good at seeking information from their clients and their families and also from the settings in which they work but however they have not been as aware of the information that they can gain from research. Although they need information from many sources, evidence based practice shows how research can also play a role in informing clinical decisions, (Hoffmann ,2010). Health professionals use the five steps of evidence-based practice (EBP) as a structure to overcoming barriers and applying best research. Examples of this include use of professional protective equipment and safety considerations when using equipment. Liamputtong (2010) states that evidence based practice is a â€Å"process that requires the practitioner to find empirical evidence about the effectiveness or efficacy of different treatment options and then determine the relevance of the evidence to a particular clients situation† (pp. 252). Sackett (1996, pp.71) states that â€Å"conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individuals patients. The practice of evidence based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external evidence from systematic research, and the more thoughtful identification and compassionate use of individual patients’ predicaments, rights and preferences.† The purpose of evidence-based practice is to assist in clinical decision-making. To make informed clinical decisions, we need to integrate lots of pieces of information, (Hoffmann ,2010). EBP reduces inconsistency in practice and increa ses efficiency and effectiveness, and therefor has been accepted by the government and funding bodies as essential to better health care. (Liamputtong, 2010). Evidence based practice has 5 steps. The first step is to convert your information needs into an answerable clinical question. The process of EBP begins with the recognition that as a health professional, have clinical information need, these types of clinical information needs can be answered with assistance of research evidence. After converting your information into clinical questions, you then need to find the best evidence to answer your clinical question, and then upon finding the evidence, you will need to critically appraise it. This means you need to examine the evidence closely to determine whether its worthy of being used to inform your clinical practice. There are 3 main aspects of the evidence that need to be appraised; Internal validity – refers to whether the evidence is trustworthy, impact – health professionals need to determine the impact of the evidence and applicability – this means to evaluate whether you can apply the results of the study to your client. The fourth step is to integrate the evidence with clinical expertise, the clients values and circumstances, and information from the practice context. The final step consists of evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency with which steps 1-4 were carried out and think about ways to improve your performance of them next time. (Hoffmann ,2010, pp.4) Evidence based practice is important because it aims to provide the most effective care that is available, with the aim of improving client outcomes. It is also important because when an individual seeks health care from a health professional, you would expect that they would provide you with most effective care and the most accurate health care information. It is also important because it reduces inconsistency in practice and increases efficiency and effectiveness. (Liamputtong ,2010, pp.253). Evidence based practice promotes an attitude of inquiry in health professionals and gets people thinking about things like ‘Why am I doing this in this way? , Is there evidence that can guide me to do this more effective way?. The most important role-played is that in ensuring that health resources are used wisely and that relevant evidence is considered when decisions are made about funding health services. Evidence-based practice provides a critical strategy to ensure that care is up t o date and that it reflects the latest  research evidence. In summary, it is important because it results in better patient outcomes, it contributes to the science of nursing, it increases confidence in decision-making and policies and procedures are current and include the latest research. (Suzanne ,2006 pp. 8) Some safety considerations, prevention and control measures include hand hygiene; the health professionals checking that all their patients’ hands and fingernails are clean. Health professionals must always perform hand hygiene rules before and after each contact with client/patient or any contact with environmental surfaces near the client/patient. Another consideration is all personal protective equipment is to be removed/discarded before leaving the room of a patient who is suspected of having a infection. Health professionals know these health/safety measures are effective because of study and previous research. (Hoffman, 2010) They can firstly convert them into questions; for example – what equipment will best prev ent myself from coming into contact with any infection?, from there research is done. Health professionals then apply this knowledge in the workplace and see whether it’s an effective method or not. The barriers that prevent nurses from using research include; lack of value for research in practice, difficulty in changing practice, lack of administration support, lack of knowledgeable mentors, insufficient time to conduct research, lack of education about the research process, complexity of research reports and difficulty accessing research reports and articles. Another barrier is also the insufficient fund supply. (Suzanne , 2006 pp. 10) A facilitating factor is that the organisation should support staff to practice evidence based practice by allocating time for individuals to pursue it. Newhouse (2007). Limitations consist of low response rate, health professionals passionate either positively or negatively more likely to respond and also the self reporting to assess knowledge, skills and attitudes may resulted in inflated or underestimated scores. â€Å"Systematic reviews may be of varying kinds, but all are based on rigorous protocols† (Liamputtong, 2010) In conclusion health professionals seek information from patients/clients but  they also turn a blind eye to the information that they can gain form research unintentionally. They do this by using the 5-step mechanism of evidence-based practice to overcome barriers and to find the most valid and reliable information. The current taxation policy imposes more on the wealthy population than on the other people. This tax burden is so much to an extent that in 2007 almost half of the overall income taxes were paid by 5% of the richest population while 40% of the citizens did not contribute to the tax pool. This tax system is too discriminatory, and the fair tax would eliminate this deficiency by enabling the citizens to control their tax expenditure. This proposal is however facing criticisms on the basis that it is regressive, and it would make the poor poorer since they spend most of their income on consumption of basic goods. The rich are also going to be favored while the middle class increases its tax burden. This is because the incomes of the middle class will be charged at a higher rate than those earning extremely large amounts of income. This would result to inequality in the society. This taxation system would ease the tax compliance hence promote investments and savings. The prices are also expected to reduce since the businesses will cut down on their costs of production. The system reduces the amount of tax revenue collected, and this would result in a federal budget deficit since it does not also address reduction of government spending. The system would present a big challenge in the collection of taxes and this will lead to tax evasion. The housing sector will be affected negatively since it will no longer be favored. Historical Links Of the Taxation Policies The taxation policies have undergone various reforms over the years. Around 1817, the government relied heavily on tariffs and abolished internal taxes. In 1862, an Act was established to ensure the effective collection of taxes and powers given to the commissioner of internal revenue to enact taxation laws. The 16th amendment of 1913 made income tax a significant source of the nation’s revenue. This was presided by unfair taxation policies in the collection of these taxes under the influence of powerful and influential people, which worked in their favor. This resulted in seeking fair and effective methods of tax imposition to maintain equality among members of the public. The fair tax act was one such method which is a viable tax system designed to ensure fairness in taxation. It was first introduced by Linder to the 106th congress in 1999. Similar bills have continuously been introduced to the congress since then. Therefore, the fair tax act is not a new thing to the Americ an citizens. Various committees have been set up to discuss the issue, but the bill has never gone past that stage. The bill has mostly been supported by the republicans, but the democrats have been reluctant in embracing the system. The US president, Barrack Obama opposes the bill arguing that it does not bring progress to tax systems. Proposition for the Fair Tax Act The Georgia for fair tax is a group representing the views of business people in favor of the fair tax system. They propose that the businesses stand to benefit from the system. This is because it eliminates taxes such as corporate taxes that increase the production costs. This means that they will produce at a lower cost and therefore sell at a lower price to the customers. This will allow the businesses have a better ground for competition in the international market hence this promotes international business transactions. Business transactions are not taxed thus facilitating them. Because of the fairness in taxation, a fair ground is provided for all businesses regardless of their sizes. Elimination of payroll taxes promotes reinvestment hence economic growth. Rob Woodall is a congressional representative in favor of the fair tax system. He represents the 7th district of Georgia. He says â€Å"the reason for this is that the fair tax isn’t about simply taxes; it is about f reedom†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Woodland, 2012). He insists it is a method of preventing over taxation. Fair tax system is the surest way of ensuring equity among citizens. His reason is that the system provides transparency in taxes collected. Similar rate of tax is charged on all goods purchased hence convenience in determine the exact amount of taxes charged on a certain amount of sales. It is of a simple structure and easy to understand unlike the current elaborate system that is too elaborate. The system eliminates allowances such as exemptions that make calculations very complicated and simply gives a simple rate of 23%. Ensures fairness in treatment of all citizens since a similar rate is charged on all kinds of goods regardless of the type. It would enable the realization of dreams among the people by minimizing the amount of taxes they pay from their hard work. It would offer freedom to the citizens and relieve the congress off its power to manipulate tax collection. This bill has ha d many sponsors who have taken a broad step in introducing it in various congress sessions. The greatest sponsor is John Linder who was the first to introduce the bill and continued to push for its adoption until his retirement. He even wrote a book, â€Å"The Fair Tax Book†, which explains his position in this system. He supports the fair treatment that it has to offer. Opposition One of the major opposers of the system is president Obama who supports a more progressive taxation system, which the system does not offer. Another group is the economists who represent the analytical population in the country. â€Å"FairTax is too good to be true, and voters should not take seriously any candidate who supports it† (Bartlett, 2007). There is a great risk in implementing this system. It encourages the reduction of the amount of taxes paid by citizens. This will mean that a lower amount of overall taxes will be collected by the government. It does not provide a method to cut down on the government expenditure. This results in a budget deficit. This deficit is not healthy for an economy since the government will have to adopt alternative measures to finance its expenditure. One of the financing alternatives is borrowing of funds that can be done internally or externally. This eventually translates into accumulation of debts. This hinders the economic growth of a country and reduces its credibility to the outside world hence the government will have problems in qualification of loans in the end. This will result in a government that spends what it does not have and relies on handouts for survival. Social Justice Social justice is the practice of maintaining equality and cohesion in a society by maintaining a balance in treatment of various social classes (younkins, 2000). The fair tax act is an issue of social justice since its effect has major effects on the social structure of the society. It is a progressive tax system meaning the poor pay lesser than the rich. Heavy taxes are charged on the poor and the amount collected is used in providing services for the society. This shows maintenance of balance among all the citizens and reduces the gap between the poor and the rich. This system also ensures fairness since taxes are charged on goods that all members of the society consume meaning every citizen will contribute to the taxes and regulate the amount of taxes paid through regulating consumption. According to rates done recently â€Å"80% of high school seniors have had a drink in the last month . Over two million of those drank alcoholically.† (National Treatment Referral) It is really a matter of concern among these college students, because the alcohol consumption among these students is increasing higher every year. Is this trend helping the students in any approach? It is in fact shattering their lives, especially for college students as this over use problem has made them academically weaker each year. Researchers believe that â€Å"teen alcoholism is a behavior pattern that needs to be identified early to avoid serious consequences.† (National Treatment Referral) It is very necessary that a college student knows their priorities and their limits, and plan responsibly. First, it would be helpful to know the word definitions of over-consumption or over-drinking. In theory there is no fixed definition of these words. It depends on each and how they define it. Over-consumption of alcohol among students is drinking to an amount above their individual capacity, and according to NIAAA â€Å"It has been estimated that over three million teenagers are out-and-out alcoholics. Several million more have a serious drinking problem that they cannot manage on their own.† (NIAAA) It’s very necessary that one knows what our own capacity is, and if we try to cross this amount we can say we are intoxicated or wasted. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism say that adolescents who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. (NIAAA) Overdrinking is damaging and a serious problem. There is always an thrill among some teenagers concerning the age limit to legally drink, and the waiting of age to drink. These are all the physiological uncertainties that these teenagers have, which runs through their mind. However, these age groups have definitely lost their self-charge. These teenagers feel over-drinking indicate their up-and-coming maturity, plus feeling they look cool while consuming alcohol. Some of these teenage students feel that after their busy days or schedule, overdrinking can somehow help them to lack stress and make them feel relaxed. Some of these students often feel that it helps them build their self-confidence. Some of these teenagers often feel curiosity to consume alcohol but nevertheless, they are old enough to know their limits and responsibilities. Students have started taking excessive advantage of their independence which is ruining their careers and it’s influencing their academics sturdily. National Statement Referral states that â€Å"Alcohol is a drug that alters the mind and body but it is also accepted by society and gets a positive message from the media and promotions that glamorize alcohol usage.† (National Treatment Referral) There are many other disadvantages of overdrinking. We suffer from many physical injuries because we are not mentally in our senses, and it’s the next morning that we come to know about these injuries. Sometimes drinking can be such a problem to our friends, family and to our colleagues. One of the most dangerous elements of over-drinking is drinking and driving. Is over-drinking of alcohol so crucial that these teenagers have to sacrifice their lives for the same? According to Focus Adolescent Services every fifteen minutes someone dies from an alcohol-related automobile accident. Each weekend, each hour, a teenager dies in a car crash. Fully fifty percent of those crashes will involve alcohol. (Focus Adolescent Services) Over-drinking can affect the personality of these teenagers as well, â€Å"dependence on alcohol and other drugs is also associated with several psychiatric problems, such as: depression, anxiety, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), antisocial personality disorder. And The three leading causes of death for 15- to 24-year-olds are automobile crashes, homicides and suicides alcohol is a leading factor in all three.† (Focus Adolescent Services) Teenagers who cannot control themselves can’t do so much in this competitive world. There are many ways to come out of this situations. Group counseling could be started in college or professionally and may be included as an extra credit classes as a motivation for the students to attend these meetings. National Treatment Referral has access to recovery centers and treatment facilities with specialized programs for teenagers. The earlier teen alcoholism is caught the more successful the treatment and recovery. Focus Adolescent Services also states that â€Å"lack of parental support, monitoring, and communication have been significantly related to frequency of drinking, heavy drinking, and drunkenness among adolescents. Harsh, inconsistent discipline and hostility or rejection toward children has also been found to significantly predict adolescent drinking and alcohol-related problems. Special Awareness programs should be conducted on the campus i n the form of theatre which can encourage them. Strong laws should be implemented against campus drinking. Instead of warning students for three times, a single warning should be implemented.† (Focus Adolescent Services) Legal measurements should become stricter on implementing these laws. If servers and vendors of alcohol apply these rules severely, than, there are definite chances in decreasing alcohol use among teens. In today’s society, the internet is becoming such a pertinent tool and many students rely on it, so by sharing articles on the internet can also help these teenage students to manage their alcohol redistribution use. Advertisements are a general role for these teenage students to have a â€Å"control-over† their drinking habits. According to an alcohol advertisement survey â€Å"two-thirds of parents say that seeing and hearing alcohol ads make teens more likely to drink alcohol, and almost three-quarters of parents say that alcohol companies ar e not doing enough to limit the amount of alcohol advertising that teens see, according to a survey conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates and American Viewpoint for the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at Georgetown University.† (T. Buddy) Consequently, after looking to all these facts, it is essential these students realize the destructive of alcohol and to have the appropriate control over their alcohol consumption. Although, the curiosity of the teenagers can be over-powering, it should not be at the cost of their learning, career and most prominently, their lives.
